A VIE Christmas Story
The holidays are upon us, and every year, I reminisce that it is truly my favorite time of year. I have joked that one reason I love it so much is we seem to be able to take a collective breath with time off to enjoy the season and enjoy life! This is one of the many reasons I welcome the holidays with open arms, but it’s not the only one. I feel happy and grateful for all I have been blessed with and even think about things that didn’t go as well as I had hoped, but it’s all part of the DNA of life. At the end of the year, no matter the ups and downs, if you have your health, friends, and family, you are rich beyond measure.
Preparing for holidays might include trying a new pumpkin pie recipe, finding stocking stuffers, figuring out the menu and who is cooking what with my sister-in-law Renee, thinking about which wrapping paper to use for different presents, and decorating the tree. It soothes my soul, reminding me of times gone by and how my mom did these things for us when we were children and even after we became adults. Nostalgia. It’s a big thing for me. I’m not sure why, but it just feels good. Having a cup of hot chocolate while watching It’s a Wonderful Life gives me all the feels.
I believe you can see and feel a spirit of nostalgia in this VIE issue; it feels old-fashioned to me in the best sense. Our cover artist, Fabiola González (@ohkeidea), created a magical work to celebrate a whimsical, fanciful depiction of Christmastime.
To help with unique present ideas, we curated an extensive holiday gift guide in C’est la VIE, which has become a VIE Christmas tradition. Check it out, but remember to buy from local shops and establishments, too! You should also try new dishes from “The Holiday Table: Festive Recipes for Every Occasion.”
And because Christmas is also the reason for the season, I pause to give thanks that this is our savior’s birthday, and it’s a time of rejoicing and honoring Jesus!

Losing a partner is unimaginable, as Bryan Martin learned when his partner, Clayton Bond, tragically passed after a severe case of ringworm. Caring for Clayton through his illness while managing a full-time job was an emotional journey that left Bryan feeling lost.⁠

After sharing his grief on social media, Bryan connected with Soaring Spirits International, an organization that supports those who have lost partners. Writing for them helped him process his emotions, and with encouragement, he turned to TikTok, where his dance videos went viral, growing his audience significantly.⁠

Now with over 1.1 million followers on Facebook and 300,000 on Instagram, Bryan shares joy alongside his grief, inspiring others with his story. He recently self-published "The Widowed Dancer," a memoir celebrating resilience and connection through loss.⁠ He also just celebrated his first anniversary with his husband, Devin!⁠

Since meeting at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, Bodin Hon and Dilara Kan have combined their unique backgrounds to create a studio that blends different disciplines. Their work combines technology and traditional crafts, logic and emotion, art and science while embracing ideas from both the East and West. Based in Hong Kong and Istanbul, Studio Yellowdot collaborates with artisans and brands across Europe and Asia, turning innovative concepts into reality. Bodin, a Chinese-American industrial designer and engineer, has a knack for detail, while Dilara, a Turkish artist and designer, draws inspiration from nature and vibrant colors. Together, they tackle a diverse range of projects, from product design to architectural installations, redefining design in exciting ways to create a sustainable future.⁠

VISU Contemporary, a fine art gallery in Miami Beach, Florida, is hosting Pari Dukovic: En Pointe – Dance & Fashion, a photography exhibition by Pari Dukovic that runs through November 2024. This exhibit features twenty-five photographs of high-fashion costumes created for the New York City Ballet, captured by Dukovic for the book New York City Ballet: Choreography & Couture. This exhibit highlights designs from notable fashion creators and aims to celebrate the combined artistry of dance and fashion. Established in 2022, VISU Contemporary focuses on promoting established and emerging artists, as well as creativity in general.⁠
