Art That Is Heaven Sent

Savanna Kidd, a thoughtful and creative art curator, designer, and collaborator with Maison30aHome + Garden, recently sat with VIE for an exclusive interview. In the interview, this New York native delved into the intriguing story behind the founding of Morning Glory Art & Design. Savanna shared her inspiration, challenges, and the driving force behind her artistic journey.

VIE: What inspired you to start a business in the art industry?

Savanna Kidd: I have always loved being an entrepreneur and the inherent creativity that comes with owning a business. Years ago, I had a multi-million-dollar rigging and lighting company based in Atlanta, Georgia. I produced and installed concert stages for well-known acts like Sting and Eric Clapton in some of the largest hotels in town. However, I studied interior design in school, and I am an artist at heart who likes to dabble in many things and craves the creative process.

Since I went to school in New York for interior design, I was exposed to upscale projects in gorgeous homes and came to recognize and appreciate high-quality furniture. Fast-forward a few years, I would periodically come across furniture that had seen better days but still had a useful life. Sadly, I had neither the resources nor the inclination to do something about it. At some point, I could no longer deny my desire to salvage and repurpose well-made furniture into valuable works of art. With a bit of dedication—and a lot of work—I learned how to strip, paint, and patina quality pre-owned furniture that was otherwise destined for the landfill. I knew there was a growing demand for it. You know that saying, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure”? It’s called “upcycling” these days, but I like to think of it more as “resurrecting!” And so, Morning Glory Art & Design—and not to sound cliché—was a dream that was birthed from my garage.

VIE: Is there any significance to the name “Morning Glory”?

SK: As I contemplated names for my new art business, I found myself immersed in the uplifting melodies of Christian music, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. I wanted the company name to reflect my gratitude to God for what He has given me. Suddenly, a name emerged in my mind: “Morning Glory”—a name that reflects the act of resurrection and celebrates the beauty and potential of each new day!

What I find most appealing about these prints is the depth of character each art piece possesses. It’s a collaborative process where clients discover this for themselves.

VIE: What led to the collaboration between Morning Glory and Maison30a?

SK: I met Christopher Bailey in Atlanta, Georgia, around 2014 at a furniture show. We immediately hit it off and soon found ourselves embarking on a creative collaboration. Oddly enough, our initial venture together was a juice bar business, but before long, Chris had a brilliant idea to combine our skills and focus on selling furniture. Over the past decade, we’ve journeyed to various locations, including New York, High Point in North Carolina, Brimfield in Massachusetts, and many others.

VIE: What is your favorite part about showing at market?

SK: Through the years, Chris and I have worked closely together, opening Maison30a. Even though we are different, we always seem to end up at the same conclusion. Chris has a much larger scale with his furniture, where my art pieces act as the perfect infill. But we work great together as a team—we lift each other up in our own weaknesses.

Chris is fantastic at setting up a show like no one else. When we visit Atlanta, he only has three days to bring in all the furniture, set it up, and paint the walls. It’s really fun, and there’s nothing quite like it. I handle the art orders, and then we set everything up together. It’s beautiful to see it all come together. People always notice our shows, and we work really well together. We’ve been collaborating for ten years, and each year just keeps getting better and better!

Morning Glory Art & DesignVIE: It seems that you place a strong emphasis on prints in your work. What aspect of prints inspires you the most, and how do you choose artists to collaborate with?

SK: I have a unique approach when it comes to selecting artists and pieces for my gallery. During a trip to Paris eight years ago, I discovered beautiful prints by artists from around the world and selected nine pieces to bring back home. Since then, I have collaborated with these artists, who send me choices through their travels. I curate a diverse and unique collection that reflects the global art scene. The artists find the art and use fabulous recycled paper to create a distressed look, which is then glazed to give it an antique finish. This process is all done by hand.

VIE: Do you have any advice for people who want to frame prints or find new pieces to complement their style?

SK: When you check out my Instagram, you’ll notice my passion for working with clients. Initially, I inquire about their space, preferences, and dimensions, and then we delve into discussing colors. What I find most appealing about these prints is the depth of character each art piece possesses. It’s a collaborative process where clients discover this for themselves.

Some individuals simply want guidance on selecting art that complements their spaces. They already have the basics covered with the space, drapes, and rugs. So, I start by asking, “What are your wall dimensions? Do you have any photos? What ambience are you aiming for?” It varies from client to client, and I find great joy in witnessing the final outcome. The installation process can also be a bit challenging at times. Did they choose a frame? Did they hang it on the wall? Did they use a rod or a frame from a store like Lowe’s? I always provide various suggestions, leaning towards the more creative side, and I’m thrilled to see where it leads.

I am incredibly grateful to be here in beautiful 30-A. My vision was to connect with interior decorators and provide more beauty to their homes. I’m thankful that I can have my own company and work with my partner, Chris, to achieve this. This is just the beginning, and we will always have new art coming in and new furniture to offer. I feel blessed to be able to work with art and artists from all over the world and sell their creations.

VIE: What are your hopes for the future of Morning Glory?

SK: I promote my work wherever I sell, but I want to expand. I aim to reach Scandinavia, explore Africa, and ultimately go global. Art is a form of energy from the people, much like music. Just as musicians collaborate and create, I love the collaborative and creative aspects of art. I am eager to connect with artists, seeking inspiration and forming a community. At Morning Glory Art & Design, we put in hard work but also know how to have fun. Let’s come together and embrace the energy that God has created for us to enjoy.
