L’intermission – Art As a Metaphor

I Hope by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota presents a thought-provoking work made of rope, paper, and steel that invites viewers to meditate on some of life’s fundamental questions. Blood-red yarn hangs from the ceiling to represent the human circulatory system. The veins are woven with ten thousand messages of hope sent in from patrons worldwide—a profound sentiment as the global pandemic has left many individuals lonely and afraid. The empty boat proclaims life’s impending finality through the absence of people. I Hope is a poetic depiction of life itself.
