Paris Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2020 Recap

Although the world is facing a very difficult time right now due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we must do everything to help each other stay positive. VIE is all about telling Stories with Heart & Soul, and that includes sharing the beautiful and inspiring work of creative people from around the globe. We love and enjoy fashion, so this is our way of helping add some positivity to everyone’s day! Here are a few of our favorite looks from the runways of Paris Fashion Week Fall 2020 shows. We hope they lift your spirits and bring hope for a fabulous and fashionable season to come later this year.
Miu Miu

Miu Miu takes on a new strong air of femininity! You could tell through the brand’s FW20 fashion show as all the models were brimming with confidence and loved what they were wearing. Each of them had a bit of a smirk on their face, alluring with a strong and feminine poise! Miu Miu took a very “formal wear” approach in this show with beautiful bedazzled dresses and a plethora of plaid. The models were done up with fabulous Brigitte Bardot hair that gave them all a very ’50s–’60s vibe that was very symbolic of powerful, beautiful women throughout the years!
Balmain

Neutral, neutrals, neutrals! This show by Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing was stunning, sleek, and strong. The talent shown in designing with latex is so very impressive—it’s a challenging material to work with, so the fact that the latex garments look liquid and seamless is exceptional! The full-body suits went all the way to the model’s fingertips for a complete latex moment! The classic, eccentric beading Balmain is known for also gave us fashion fairy-tale feels. Truly, all the details in this show were incredible. Extremely broad shoulders with cinched waists had Kim Kardashian West vibes, while freshly remastered blazers included beautiful long draped lapels that gracefully fell to tie together. Bravo!
Chanel

Chanel’s show was something a little different than what we’re used to seeing! The majority of the looks were black and white, and one word describes this show, CHIC! The fashion powerhouse gave us their classics along with a punk-rock vibe. Can we just say, we love the new runway moments with models walking together side by side, as though they’re walking down the streets of NYC with their best friends! It is so refreshing to see models be able to show emotion. The gorgeous show included bits of the classic tweed, cute pantyhose, and tall leather boots. Chanel has also done something especially cool on Instagram; the brand is featuring each model with a cool, casual look on the left, a runway video of them in the middle, and classic Chanel look to the right. Props to Chanel for showcasing their models outside of the show!
Giambattista Valli

Giambattista Valli never disappoints with his beautifully feminine pieces. In this particular show, he bumped up the masculinity a bit. A lot of the outfits were paired with combat boots, which was a new switch up that we absolutely loved! As you may know, Giambattista Valli is known for his huge extravagant tulle ballgowns that we have seen many celebs wear down the red carpet. For this show, he played back his “hugeness” and gave us more practical dresses that every woman could wear! Although we’d love to wear huge ballgowns to the grocery store, it may not be super easy to maneuver… Giambattista Valli also graced us with classic tweed pieces, oodles of crystal bedazzlements, and perfect sheer dresses with the cutest leotards underneath—Mr. Valli, you’ve done it again!
Balenciaga

As the Balenciaga show commenced, water overflowed the floor and even over guests’ feet in the front row! (Quick, save those red bottoms!) The water alone made this an immersive experience for everyone, then as Balenciaga’s show started, dark with sinister-looking models walked the catwalk with an Orthodox church vibe inspired by the designer’s upbringing. Demna Gvasalia showed us a little bit of everything—feminine dresses, soccer uniforms, wetsuits, motorbike suits, and more! It was definitely a show that was hard to look away from. With latex pieces matching the wet runway and leather separates dominating the show, Balenciaga covered everything, both literally and figuratively!
Off-White

Virgil Abloh has mixed things up a bit in this fall collection. You don’t see his famous quotation marks on any of the clothing. Instead, Abloh has revolutionized his brand for all. Off-White isn’t something for only the younger generations, so they brought in a handful of models popular in the 90s to show the aim of evolving his brand. Yolanda Hadid, 90s supermodel, made a comeback appearance rocking a sexy and sophisticated graffitied blazer-and-pant set! Yolanda joined both of her supermodel daughters, Gigi and Bella, as they all rocked the runway. This show was filled with trends like leather separates, houndstooth, and even possibly a new trend—the half ballgown, half Arc’teryx sports jacket. You never know what may be coming next from Off-White!
Lanvin

Lanvin’s artist director, Bruno Sialelli, dresses the everyday woman for work and play! The structured, tailored coats and dainty feminine dresses in this show were jaw-dropping. Not only did Sialelli provide us with beautiful womenswear, but spectacular menswear. also graced the runway The men wore beautifully structured suits and jackets that had bold color and coolness. This show was filled with ravishing elongated coats, silk and feather accessories, and fabulous bags!
Saint Laurent

The latex trend is everywhere! There is a sleek sexiness about it that just draws us in, and Saint Laurent’s show was packed with the outfit combination of a broad blazer/jacket, skin-tight latex pants, and Mary Jane stilettos. Latex does not always have to be skintight, and that is precisely what Saint Laurent presented. Every outfit had just enough of a luxurious latex touch, whether that be a legging, dress, boot, or bralette. Another big trend for the season is long pleated suit shorts. You’ll see a lot of these shorts paired with tall boots and something a little sexier on top.
Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton gave us past meets present for this fall. Backstage, people meandered dressed in Victorian-era clothing, then came out acting shocked and surprised as the models were walking down the runway. This past-meets-present theatrical outlook was an exciting way of studying how much fashion has changed over the centuries. Nicolas Ghesquière also incorporated a lot of moto-jacket leather, ranging from vests to dresses, skirts, and gloves. Part of this theme may be a reference to Ghesquière being selected to co-host the 2020 Met Gala, as this year’s theme is “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” LV’s looks had vibes from every era, with 1950s ruffled slip skirts, 1980s ski jackets, and futuristic leather biker attire.
Christian Dior

The Christian Dior venue was layered with illuminated feminine proclamations. This background brought to fruition the type of show Maria Grazia Chiuri wanted to portray. All the looks in this show were strong and bold, just like the women walking in it! Plaids and prints dominated the runway with a ’70s punk schoolgirl vibe. With a lot of girl power behind these outfits, you can’t help but be inspired to present your most excellent self. Many of the famous logo-mania Dior scarfs were incorporated throughout this show in the form of headwear giving all the models a modern edge to complete their outfits. Chiuri knew what she was doing with this collection; everything she put out on that runway was so thought out, she created stunning clothes that are trendy and “in” yet not so avant-garde that you couldn’t wear it anywhere. She designs for every woman, no matter the age or shape. It’s all beautifully classy with a trendy kick-ass vibe!
Givenchy

Givenchy’s show was loaded with oversized tailoring. It kind of sounds like an oxymoron, right? Maybe so, but it worked beautifully; it was all so structured yet large and asymmetrical. A big trend alert was the layering of dresses and pants. We have seen this trend for the past few months in many different shows, so it’s bound to become more influential as the year goes on. A variety of shapes and designs were used in some of the final looks. Clare Waight Keller incorporated delicate printed fabrics with luxurious leather accessories like gloves and belts, and eveningwear graced the runway with beautifully articulate formal features. Très magnifique!
