Inside the Codes That Shape Maison Margiela

May 2026

Inspirations

With its folders project, Maison Margiela offers an unprecedented look into the ideas and values that define the fashion house, merging physical exhibitions with an evolving digital archive. Launching alongside the Fall-Winter 2026 show in Shanghai, the initiative explores four core house codes—Artisanal, Anonymity, Tabi, and Bianchetto—through a series of curated experiences across Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. Each exhibition reflects a distinct aspect of Margiela’s creative language, from couture craftsmanship and the symbolism of the mask to the enduring cultural resonance of the Tabi shoe and the house’s signature white overpaint technique. In parallel, the brand’s internal “folders,” typically reserved for studio use, are made publicly accessible for the first time, revealing imagery, timelines, and processes as the project unfolds. The result is a dynamic, layered exploration of authorship and anonymity, inviting audiences into the inner workings of one of fashion’s most conceptually driven maisons.
