Casa Azzurra
September 2025
A Bold Desert Retreat
Story and photography courtesy of Roam Properties
Designed by Mirtilla Alliata di Montereale, an Italian architect (SCI-Arc graduate) raised in Hawaii with a professional background working with Frank Gehry and Kulapat Yantrasast, Casa Azzurra draws inspiration from her family’s summers in the Aeolian Islands, the innovative vision of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the natural beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.
Spanning ten acres, Casa Azzurra is an architectural experience that expands beyond its walls, framing the surrounding landscape while embracing bold color in a sea of desert neutrals. Its striking cat-face stucco exterior is washed in five shades of blue, reflecting the shifting hues of the sky, while a central courtyard saturated in cobalt sets the tone.
Nestled on a sprawling oasis in the heart of Joshua Tree, this architectural home captures the essence of the desert’s vast sky with its striking exterior, using various shades of blue to match the ever-changing hues of the horizon. Inside, an interior garden flourishes with unique desert plants, creating a tranquil retreat. The home offers four spacious bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, and a full kitchen equipped with premium Forte appliances. Thoughtfully designed for both relaxation and entertainment, the space includes a state-of-the-art projector system with surround sound, perfect for immersive movie nights.
Outdoor amenities embrace the stunning landscape, featuring a roof deck, fire pit, Bocce ball court, pool and spa, and a pickleball court. The outdoor dining area is complemented by a built-in barbecue grill, making it an ideal setting for al fresco gatherings. A separate guest house, near the pickleball court, offers a private escape with a wood-paneled interior, custom-built furniture, and a skylight above the bed for stargazing. With luxurious details like Venetian glass sconces and a handcrafted outdoor dining table, this exceptional home is a sanctuary where modern elegance meets the timeless spirit of Joshua Tree.
The interior also features rich textures, jewel-toned bedrooms, Murano glass fixtures, and tactile layers of linen, wood, and stone create an atmosphere that is elevated yet inviting. Thoughtfully designed for gathering and retreat, the home encourages slow mornings over espresso, long dinners under the stars, and a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living.
