In the midst of COVID-19, the world around us is in crisis mode and for many working people, the normal, mundane day-to-day life has come to an abrupt stop. As these new realities unfold and social distancing becomes the new norm, it’s natural to feel anxious about what’s to come. But in these uncertain times, it’s very important to prioritize yourself, especially if you’re in deep stress. From eating healthy and getting enough sleep to practicing ways to set your mind at ease, here are a few ways you can practice self-care in the comfort of your home.

Stay on Your Sleep Schedule to Ensure Quality Rest

Keeping a sleep routine is crucial in times like this, especially when our normal routine is thrown off track. Before bed, unplug from your phone and set an alarm for the morning to ensure you’re waking up at the same time each day. While naps are great, try to avoid them if you have trouble sleeping in the evenings to ensure quality nighttime rest. If you still have trouble sleeping at night, get up and do something relaxing and quiet instead of tossing and turning in bed. By getting out of bed, you’re teaching your body that the bed is only meant for resting, not for being on the phone, watching television, or lying there feeling anxious, which can worsen insomnia.

Stay Nourished and Hydrated

High stress levels can often have a dramatic effect on the body. To enhance your digestion and boost your mood, increase your intake of nutritious vegetables, drink lots of water, and try to avoid junk food the best you can. Another way to optimize your digestive system is by taking probiotics, which help fight bacteria, aid in absorbing nutrients, reduce infections, and more. While drinking a glass of wine or two (or more, which seems tempting while self quarantining), stay hydrated by drinking at least one glass of water per each alcoholic drink you consume.

Get Active To Boost Your Well-Being

Sometimes when you’re stressed, your muscles tense up. This can also happen thanks to being less mobile while you’re stuck in the confines of your home, means staying active is even more important to one’s health. Exercising reduces your body’s stress hormones. Try at-home workouts such as Peloton, live-stream workout classes like Pure Barre, have a solo dance party (or get your fam to join in), or just come up with your own small routine. Alleviate Anxiety with Meditation

Meditation is proven to be a mood stabilizer, and meditating twice a day—once in the morning when you wake up and once in the evening—is great for easing the nerves. If you need help, try using some meditation apps such as Calm or Headspace.
